Venice Tourist Tax: What Visitors need to know for 2025
Venice has introduced a mandatory access fee for day-trippers and tourist taxes for overnight visitors. These measures are designed to manage overtourism and protect the city’s fragile heritage. The system is unique to Venice and may change periodically based on crowd forecasts, seasonal peaks, and local ordinances.
This guide explains the access fee for daily visitors, the tourist tax for overnight stays, exemptions, payment rules, and what travelers should expect in 2025.
What is the Venice Access Fee?
The Venice Access Fee (Contributo di Accesso) applies to day-trippers entering the historic center on selected dates.
Typical 2025 Fee Amount
EUR 5 per person
(on designated peak days, usually spring, summer, and holiday periods)
The fee applies to visitors entering Venice between 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM.
Who must pay the Venice Access Fee?
The access fee applies to non-overnight visitors, including:
Cruise passengers entering Venice
Tour group participants
Travelers visiting for the day
Visitors staying outside the Comune di Venezia (e.g., Mestre, mainland hotels)
Who is Exempt from the Access Fee?
Exemptions include:
Children under 14
Overnight guests with confirmed hotel bookings
Residents and property owners
Workers and students commuting into Venice
Visitors attending weddings or funerals with documentation
Medical visits and special circumstances
Anyone visiting relatives living in the historic center
Overnight guests do not pay the access fee because they already pay the city’s tourist tax.
How do you pay the Venice Access Fee?
The fee must be paid online in advance:
Official Portal
https://cda.ve.it (Venice Access Fee System)
After payment, travelers receive a QR code which may be checked at access points, waterbus stations, or by roaming stewards.
Cruise passengers may have the fee collected by the cruise line depending on the itinerary.
Venice Tourist Tax for Overnight Stays
In addition to the access fee for day visitors, Venice applies a tourist tax (Imposta di Soggiorno) to overnight stays.
Typical 2025 Rates
Hotels (4–5 stars)
EUR 3.50 – EUR 5.00 per person per night
Mid-range hotels / B&Bs
EUR 1.50 – EUR 3.00 per person per night
Apartments / Airbnb / short-term rentals
EUR 3.00 – EUR 5.00 per person per night
Hostels
EUR 1.00 – EUR 2.00 per person per night
This tax is paid per person per night, up to 5 consecutive nights.
Children under 10 are usually exempt.
How the Tourist Tax is collected
For overnight guests:
Hotels and rentals collect the tax at check-in
Payment is in cash or card
It appears as a separate line on the accommodation invoice
Short-term rental hosts (including Airbnb) must collect the tax directly from guests.
Why Venice Charges these Fees
Venice introduced both the access fee and the tourist tax to:
Reduce congestion in the historic center
Protect fragile structures and waterways
Fund sanitation and infrastructure
Preserve heritage sites
Manage overtourism during peak seasons
Support city operations strained by large numbers of day-trippers
Venice is one of the world’s most visited cities, yet its resident population is small and declining, making sustainable tourism management essential.
Do Cruise Passengers pay the Venice Fees?
Depending on the entry point:
Cruise visitors may pay the access fee
Overnight cruise stays may trigger the tourist tax
Cruise operators may collect fees on behalf of passengers
It varies by itinerary and docking location.
Do Tourists Pay any other Fees?
Visitors may also encounter:
Museum or heritage surcharges
Vaporetto (waterbus) transit fees
Seasonal event surcharges
Luggage storage fees
These are separate from the access fee and tourist tax.
